This compelling memoir of one woman's journey of enchantment, tragedy, and romance unfolds against the backdrop of a stunning mountaintop in rural Virginia. Purchased on a lark for weekend camping by a clueless suburban couple, the mountain brings Marcia Mabee and her husband Tim surprising wildlife encounters, dramatic botanical discoveries, and a passion for conservation that leads to its dedication by the state as the Naked Mountain Natural Area Preserve.

Naked Mountain veers in an unexpected direction when Marcia faces a life-threatening cancer diagnosis. Struggling with energy-sapping treatments, she continues to battle environmental threats to the beloved mountain where her ashes are to be spread. Just as her prognosis brightens, the story takes a darker turn, extinguishing the couple's hopes for the future and throwing Marcia into the depths of despair. But in a surprising twist, she confronts the divergent forces of deep grief and new love to remake a life. Naked Mountain is an amazing personal journey that explores the joys of discovery, the uncertainties of life and the enduring bonds of marriage.

Naked Mountain A Memoir (Audible Audio Edition) Marcia Mabee Sally Martin Books

Naked Mountain: A Memoir was so much more than I had expected having read some of the early blogs the author had written about the mountain. Had I followed the blog regularly, I may have better anticipated the multi-faceted love story it became. It was no surprise to learn about the flora and fauna of the region, and it was a pleasure to see the wonders of the region through her eyes and understand how important it is to preserve that area and protect it from incursive development.
What I didn't expect but thoroughly embraced was the telling of the author's love story which was so much involved with their weekends on the mountain, their shared devotion to her husband's special needs daughter, and the author's determination to maintain a normal life while battling a particularly dreaded form of cancer. She was so open and honest about her long battle to survive while also maintaining a demanding career that when she won her battle only to have her husband be striken, with cancer, I could not imagine how she could endure, but she did. And I could not put down the book until she had!

Naked Mountain A Memoir (Audible Audio Edition) Marcia Mabee Sally Martin Books Reviews

A beautiful book about resiliency, the human spirit and our natural world. Life is, at times, messy and difficult and Ms. Mabee demonstrates her strength and willingness to move forward with optimism and love despite heartbreak and physical suffering. A tribute. Excellent.
Naked Mountain is beautiful story entwining nature and humanity. Mabee writes about the wild and compelling landscape of Naked Mountain with the detail and eloquence of Annie Dillard. Her deeply personal story of love and loss provides a counterpoint, and each of these threads informs the other. We see the long view from the top of the mountain, and the close-up introspection in the relationships. A satisfying read.
This is a stunning memoir which has left me breathless. What a remarkable journey up to a mountain top to the natural world of Virginia's Blue Ridge that she and her beloved husband discovered together. This dual passion, conservation of Naked Mountain and of her husband, sustains her as she must face unthinkable hurdles and dark despair. Yet she is clearly a fighter and we are truly inspired to imagine that we too can overcome seemingly unsurmountable challenges to find love and hope once again.
I loved reading Naked Mountain, A Memoir. Heartfelt, clearly written and insightful. Couldn't put it down. Glorious descriptions of nature's bounties. Paragraphs are emotionally packed with joy, heartbreak and success. Author Marcia Mabee writes eloquently. Her clarity and wisdom shine forth like the beautiful mountain she protects. A stunning love story with present day issues, environmental concerns, and healthcare challenges. Highly recommended.
Naked Mountain is a real place in the county where I live. I thought this book was going to be about life here in the woods. No. This book is a love story about the mountain, some wildflowers, two wonderful marriages, and some wonderful parents and their wonderful daughter. It is also about cancer. When you boil it down, it is a book about courage The courage to love and the courage to live. I could not put this book down until I finished it. I am going to read it again.

This is a book for grownups who know how a sentence should look. Ms. M is a professional communicator, and it shows in her writing. It is straightforward, unembellished, without any stylistic stuff. It is concrete She uses real names of real places and real people, some of whom I know.
Naked Mountain is a beautifully written memoir. Marcia Mabee’s professional life revolves around Capitol Hill, having been a congressional staffer and a rep for state epidemiologists. Her private life revolves around her love of her husband, Tim, and their mutual love of Naked Mountain. The book is a love story, a nature journal and a story of her ovarian cancer journey. I was disappointed when I read the final page, and there was not another page to read. I hope there is a sequel, one day.

One weekend my husband read the book, and commented to me, “Damn interesting book with a lot of stuff in it; things we can relate to.”

I highly recommend this book.
Most of what I read is fiction, but I was drawn to Marcia Mabee’s Naked Mountain because I, too, once lived in Reston, VA, and on weekends escaped the DC area to a place in the mountains—in my case a log cabin near Madison, VA, about an hour north of Naked Mountain. But one doesn’t need to be familiar with the region to appreciate Ms. Mabee’s eloquently written tale of love and loss. For her Naked Mountain, with its stunning views of the Blue Ridge and its precious wildflowers, represents both the child she never had and the husband she adored, and she’s determined to protect it. She sets about destroying the ailanthus trees and other invasives threatening the wildflowers just as both she and her husband are fighting cancer. This is an unusual story, told by an intelligent, courageous woman. I’m so glad I read it.
